E911 calling with Exitty

Emergency Calling (E911): How It Works and Important Limitations

Exitty provides Enhanced 911 (“E911”) emergency calling as a mandatory paid add-on for customers in the US with a physical address, priced per location, per month, using our PBX and VoIP services. This article explains how emergency calling works, what Exitty does, and what customers are responsible for to ensure emergency services can reach the correct location.

Because VoIP-based phone systems work differently than traditional landlines, it is important to understand the limitations described below.

If you are uncomfortable with these limitations, you should maintain an alternative method of contacting emergency services, such as a mobile phone.

How Emergency Calling Works with Exitty

When E911 is enabled, Exitty routes emergency calls to the appropriate emergency response center based on the physical address provided by the customer for that location.

Emergency responders rely on this address information to determine where to send help. Exitty does not automatically detect your location.

Your Responsibilities as a Customer

To ensure E911 works correctly, the customer is responsible for the following:

1. Providing an Accurate Physical Address

You must provide a complete and accurate physical service address for each location using E911. Exitty configures emergency calling only using the address information supplied by the customer.

2. Updating Address Changes Immediately

If any phone, extension, or device is moved—whether permanently or temporarily—or if your business changes locations, you must notify Exitty immediately so the E911 address can be updated.

Failure to update address information may cause emergency responders to be dispatched to the wrong location.

3. Verifying Your E911 Address

You can verify the address currently associated with your device or location by dialing 922. The system will announce the address on file.

We strongly recommend testing:

  • After initial setup

  • After any move or relocation

  • Periodically, to confirm accuracy

4. Informing Your Users

The customer is responsible for informing employees, contractors, and any other users of the phone system about:

  • How E911 works

  • Its limitations

  • The importance of reporting address changes

Important Limitations of E911 Service

Emergency calling over VoIP has limitations that do not exist with traditional landlines.

Internet and Power Dependency

E911 will not function if:

  • There is a power outage

  • Your internet service is down or unstable

  • Your network equipment is not functioning

No Guarantee of Location or Callback Display

Exitty cannot guarantee that emergency operators will receive:

  • Your exact location

  • A callback phone number

Some emergency response centers do not support receiving this information. You should always be prepared to verbally provide your location and phone number to the emergency operator.

Call Routing Limitations

In some cases, emergency calls may be routed to a centralized emergency call center instead of a local dispatcher. The operator may ask for your location in order to transfer the call appropriately.

Do not disconnect the call unless instructed to do so by the operator. If the call is disconnected, call back immediately.

Mobile and Remote Use

If you use Exitty services on mobile devices or from remote locations:

  • Emergency calling may not work as expected

  • Exitty’s applications are not a replacement for cellular emergency calling

  • You should use your mobile phone’s native dialer for emergencies whenever possible

Service Availability

Emergency calling may not be available or may be limited:

  • Outside the United States

  • In locations where emergency calling is not supported by local regulations

  • When using phone numbers assigned to a different country

Exitty does not guarantee emergency calling availability in all regions.

Disclaimer and Liability

Exitty relies on third-party networks and emergency response systems to route emergency calls. Exitty does not control emergency response centers, operators, or responders.

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • Exitty is not responsible for delays, failures, or errors in emergency response

  • Exitty is not responsible for incorrect dispatch caused by inaccurate or outdated address information

  • The customer assumes responsibility for ensuring address accuracy and user awareness

Summary

To ensure the best possible emergency calling experience:

  • Subscribe to the E911 add-on

  • Keep your address information accurate and up to date

  • Dial 922 to verify your address

  • Maintain an alternative way to contact emergency services

If you have questions or need to update your E911 information, contact Exitty support.
